Spotlight on Champion Pet Foods!

Two of the Hip Hound’s favorite kibble brands are made by Champion Pet Foods. They are based in Canada and have some of the highest pet food standards of any kibble brands!

The mission at Champion Pet Foods is to provide biologically appropriate dog and cat foods from fresh regional ingredients. The concept of a biologically appropriate pet food is to match the variety and freshness of meats that a dog or cat would have hunted in the wild. It is also meant to mirror the diet of their ancestors and provide them with the food they were designed to consume. The sharp teeth and short digestive tract are the biggest indicators of their body’s development to metabolize a diet of mainly meat.

Cats especially are not meant to be consuming carbohydrates, which is why Orjen and Acana kibbles contain a 60-80% ratio of meat.

  • The remaining 20-40% consists of low-glycemic carbohydrates, like chickpeas and lentils, as well as fresh, local berries.
  • While these ingredients provide little nutritional value for a dog or cat, they are included in these kibbles to promote optimum body weight as well as stable blood sugar levels.

Orijen has also taken things a step closer to raw with their Freeze-Drying process.

  • Freeze-Drying is the process of removing the moisture from raw meats without cooking.
  • These foods retain all of the nutrients of a raw food, but they are a more convenient way to include raw in your pet’s diet.

The selection of Freeze-Dried dog foods use the same formulas as their kibble counter-parts, the only difference being that these are not cooked.

  • So if your pup enjoys the Adult Dog, Tundra or Regional Red kibbles, they’re sure to enjoy the raw option as a special meal or even as a topper to mix things up!

The treats for cats and dogs are also made using the Freeze-Drying process, however they contain meats only!

  • This makes for a high reward treat that no kitty or pup will turn down! Not only will you be indulging your furry kid, but you will be providing even more nourishment.
  • Just like the Freeze-Dried foods, there are treats made up of the same proteins as the main kibble formulas.
  • There are also treats made up of one protein source - this is a great option for finicky kitties or for your pup who might have an allergy to a specific meat.
